Color Series - Taupes: Here's the 411 on Inglot's 402

Are you ready for the next lovely taupe in our series?  Well, feast your eyes on Inglot's 402.  This particular shade of taupe leans browner than the others I've featured thus far and is just as pretty.  The eyeshadow itself is a buttery soft pearl and yields unrelenting color.  I bought 402 as part of Inglot's Freedom System line where you can buy individual shadows and create your own personalized palette (which I talk more about here).  Their shadows, and I believe most of their cosmetics, are assigned numbers in lieu of an actual name.  I believe the cost of the individual Freedom shadows are now $5.00.

402 - Second column, third shadow

Can you tell which one is Inglot 402?

The differences seem much more subtle when swatched than when looking at the colors straight in the pan, but 402 is definitely the "browner" of the bunch.

Inglot is known for having shadows of excellent quality and this one is no exception.  I have had absolutely no problems with 402; it lasts all day on me with no fading when using a primer.

GORGEOUS, I tell you.  Just gorgeous!

*Next up: I would cross burning Sand just to get this taupe...

Tarte's TEN Palette Is A... Yes, 10!

Okay, so here's the second palette I bought during my previously mentioned "spree".  It is Tarte's TEN palette.  Not only does it come with ten full-sized eyeshadows, it also comes with a mini-mascara, double-ended eyeliner (black/aubergine), eyeshadow blending brush and an info card that both describes the shades and how to wear the shadows.

Again, the eyeshadows are very soft and the color payoff is excellent.  Unlike the Carried Away palette, this one has absolutely no flaky duds.  The eyeliner is soft and also has great color payoff.

There's really not too much more I can say about this palette.  It really is a nice mixture of mattes, satins and pearls; nothing is frost city here.  The mattes are not chalky at all, but have a satin-y feel to them.  And the palette is refillable so you could easily replace or switch out these shadows with other Tarte individual shadows if you wish.  I bought this from Beauty.com and I am very happy!

Oh!  Did you see the taupe?!  Yes, the taupe in the first row of the palette?!  Tarte describes the color as a shimmering silver gray, but believe me - it's taupe!!  Aaaah!  Did you hear me?  TAUPE!!  #Winning  LOL!

There's A Lot At Steak In Philly

Philly.  The city of brotherly love.  A hard scrabble, blue collar town that takes its sports very seriously, infamously so.  A beautifully gritty place with a rich food culture: Tastykakes, soft pretzels, Frank's sodas, hoagies, water ice and, of course, cheesesteaks.  Ask anyone from Philly where to get the best steak sandwich and you will get a variety of answers.  A lot will respond based on their own neighborhoods and around the way spots.  In fact, almost every good steak spot is located in some type of 'hood.  So when my friend from New York came two summers ago and asked me where to find the best steak, I offered to take him to Max's in the Germantown section of Philly.

My sister lives in this part of the city and when she took me to Max's for the first time, I was in love.  Soft bread, bread that was filled to the brim with copious amounts of thinly sliced and diced steak, melted Provolone, salt, pepper and ketchup... OMG, delicious!  As good as the steaks are there, I was more impressed with the size of the sandwich; a half sandwich is nearly double the size of a half in a lot of other places.  I was like, 'Whoa'.

Cheesesteak from Max's

Needless to say, my friend couldn't wait to dig in.

So since Max's is more of a take-out than an eat-in establishment, we went downtown to the famous Reading Terminal (an indoor farmers' market) and ate.  And he loved it.  And I proudly popped my collar.

Okay, fast forward to the next day.  My friend said that he wanted to hit up another spot.  This time he wanted to go to the tourist-y spot that he had heard so much about - Pat's steaks in South Philly.  Now, believe it or not, I am a true native from Philly (born and raised) but have NEVER been to Pat's nor Geno's, which is located within a stone's throw from Pat's, right across the street.  These two places have had a higher profile because of the various mentions in newspapers, on TV food shows, and music videos (Boyz II Men, anyone?), but I never felt compelled to go there.  So I told my friend that I would be down to go since this would be a first-time adventure for the both of us.

And imagine what thoughts ran through my head when my friend sat down to eat their version of the Philly staple.

Cheesesteak from Pat's
Umm... well, the bread looks good.  I mean, I felt like pulling a Clara Peller and yelling, "Where's the beef?!"  Seriously, I saw more bread than steak.  I mean, look for yourself!  And look at the small clearing of meat that you can see; it looks like a SteakUm!  You know - the processed, rectangular beef-sicles they sell in the grocery store?  Yeah, those.  And look at that poor cheese, not a melt in sight.  It's standing just as stiff and rigid as the steak below it.  I couldn't believe it.  And Geno's steaks look exactly identical.  We didn't dare order one from them, but were able to see their patrons eating them outside.  Are you kidding me?  I had to laugh.  Being a good host, I really didn't want to heckle my friend's sandwich too badly, so I tried to keep my comments to a minimum.  But he quickly told me after finishing the small, meat barren victual that he was disappointed and that it was not as good as the one he had yesterday.

It just goes to show you that not all tourist spots are the ones tourists should visit.  In fact, I hear that about every city/country.  Sometimes you have to go where only the well-versed natives tread... and especially in a city where stakes are high (pun intended) when it comes to finding a good, official Philly cheesesteak.  You don't want one that's too tough or chewy, or dry, or one that's so greasy that the bread falls apart before you even get a chance to bite it, or one where you have to send a search party out just to find the meat in the sandwich...or so small that you can finish it in two bites.

So, yes, you may get a lot of answers as to where to find a good one, but you're more likely to find it via a native's tongue than from a write up in a paper or segment on a show done by someone who has only visited the city once or twice.  I'm just sayin'.

Color Series- Taupes: Smooth As Satin

Here goes the third installment of the taupe series and it brings me to one of the prettiest ones I own, MAC's Satin Taupe.  MAC describes this as a "taupe with silver shimmer", but I can tell you that the color is much more nuanced in person.  It leans on the warm side and tends to look like it has purple undertones depending on what other color you pair it with and the way the light hits it in the pan.  It's very soft and easy to work with.  MAC also describes the finish as a frost, but please believe me that this will not show up as a disco ball on your eye.  Its finish is in the same vein as my previously mentioned Sassy and Nutty eyeshadows.

Can you see how the color looks a little more purple?  Both pictures were take in natural daylight, however, the one above was taken later on in the day.  I did this so you get the full idea of what I was trying to describe.

As you can see, Satin Taupe and Sassy are very close in color.  Sassy is just pulling a tad bit warmer/redder.  Just a tad.  And it's not very frosty, either.

Again, another must have for any taupe lover!  Really, a must have for anyone who's wanting a versatile neutral outside the various shades of plain ol' brown.

I bought this single eyeshadow in the pan form so that I could easily pop it into a palette, but they do sell it in a pot.  The cost of the pan is now $12, pots $15.

And the taupe ship keeps running along...

*Next up: I'm going to give you the 411 on fave 402...

Got A Little Carried Away With Tarte

Okay, so earlier I spilled the beans and told you guys about my little shopping spree.  Well, it would only be fair of me to also show n' tell you what I got.  Again, it wasn't but two eyeshadow palettes and two lip products, but I feel guilty nonetheless.  Well, I did until I opened the boxes and started sampling the goods...

So this regal looking beauty (above) is the Tarte Carried Away Collector's Set - one of Tarte's early offerings for the upcoming holidays.  It is my first time purchasing anything from Tarte and I figured this would be a good way to get familiar with the brand and some of its products.  I actually purchased this and another palette of theirs which I will review later.

Tarte is a cosmetics company that prides itself on the use of natural ingredients that not only look good, but are good for you.  Their products are paraben-free and infused with vitamins and other skin benefiting properties.  I'd heard a lot about their Amazonian Clay blushes, (which they also have in a holiday set consisting of four new shades) but wasn't really interested in the colors offered.  Besides, I have enough blushes.  So I decided to take a look at their shadows.

This particular set comes with 24 full-sized eyeshadows, 8 lip glosses, 1 travel sized blush, 1 domed blush brush, 1 mini mascara and a sample sized finishing powder.  Action packed, right?  And it all comes in a pretty purple and gold travel case, housed in a pink and gold box that's prepped perfectly for gift giving.

Tri-fold case snaps in front

Okay, when I tell you that the eyeshadows are so pretty... Wow.  The colors are really rich looking.  And, thankfully, that's how most of them feel, too.  They are buttery soft and very pigmented; there were only two shades that were flaky.  And when I say flaky I mean that they didn't really swatch well and weren't as pigmented.  They "flaked" on my finger.  You'll see.  But overall, I am very happy and excited about this palette.  Two out of twenty-four?  Not bad!

See the second swatch from the top?  Flaky!  Boo!
Flaky culprit #1 (middle)

Again, second from the top - Flaky shadow #2.

Flaky culprit #2 (middle)

The Amazonian Clay blush in Adventurous (below) is described as a "shimmering rose" and is very nicely pigmented.  Very happy, happy, happy!

I did not swatch the lip glosses because, well... they're typical lip glosses!  They provide a nice wash of color to lips, work fantastic over lipsticks and smell of mint.  If you are familiar with Make Up Forever's HD finishing powder then you are already familiar with Tarte's offering: it's a white, translucent powder used to set your foundation/concealer, leaving a smooth, "soft focus" finish.  Mascara, haven't tried it yet but heard good things about it.  But my real interest here was the shadows and blush.  And I must say that I am pleased with my purchase.

I believe this set, along with their other holiday sets, are being sold at Sephora.  However, Ulta also carries an exclusive holiday set from Tarte (I believe it may be a lip gloss set?).  The retail for Carried Away is $54.00 and for all you get, including the travel bag, it's more than a great deal.  You do the math.

Oh. Em. Gee. Somebody Stop Me, Please!

Ok, do you see the boxes?  Do you see them?  Oh, my goodness... I need help.  Seriously, I need to stop.  And I am.  I must.

I bought some more makeup, guys.  I know, I can't believe it either.  Do I need anymore makeup?  NO!  I have just about every color of eyeshadow available to man.  I don't need any more at all.  But I bought more.  Ugh!  Well, one palette I bought to help fill an order so I could get free shipping and the other... well, there's just no excuse.  Nope, I have none other than I saw it on another blog, thought the colors were pretty and simply wanted it.

In my defense, I do find shopping cathartic.  While others drink or smoke or have sex, I like to shop.  But I am careful with my money and never spend what I don't have, but as of recent I have been acting like a maniac.  And I don't really know why.  Am I bored?  Umm... maybe a little.  But I gotta get a grip because even though I like to shop, I start to feel overwhelmed when I feel like I am buying too much of something, you know?  Maybe I'm just weird, but with all the makeup and eyeshadows and stuff I have I start to panic that I'll never get around to using it all.  Like, it's all going to go to waste because I don't even wear makeup every day.  Now I know there are lots of people that have way more products than I have so I'm not claiming to have the mother lode of all makeup "collections", but for me it's more than enough.  No mas.  I cannot buy anymore until I start to go through what I have.

So, as of today, I am giving you permission to slap me if I buy any more crap.  I'm serious.  Of course, it would have to be a virtual slap, but please give me a verbal tongue lashing if I even attempt to buy another makeup product, mainly eyeshadows.  I don't really count lipsticks because I do wear those more often, but blushes and shadows I have an abundance of and haven't even caused a small dent in my stash.  So just slap me, guys, if I go astray.  Nice and hard.  Across the face.  Full palm with all five fingers.

*sigh*
